In 2013 Spain is began granting the Golden Visa to non-EU citizens, on the condition that they purchase Spanish Real Estate of at least 500.000 Euros free of charges or encumbrances. If the property purchased exceeds 500,000 Euros, then the amount above this limit may be mortgaged. Alternatively, the overseas investor may purchase more than one property so long as the total investment is not less than 500,000 euros, giving the opportunity to keep one for personal use and the second to generate rental income.
Obtaining a long-term residence also allows ease of travel in EU Schengen countries.
