About La Heredia

The vast tract of land which includes La Heredia and the neighbouring community of El Madroñal was first acquired by an industrialist, Don Manuel Agustin Heredia, in the early 1800’s. It was densely forested with pine and cork trees and these trees were to be used as fuel for the family’s iron works just east of Marbella.

Many of Don Manuel Augustin Heredia´s workers were gypsies and at that time Spanish government wanted to expel those who were not baptised or did not have properly registered family names. Therefore, he made it so that every one of his gypsy workers would be baptised and bear the Heredia family name.

The descendants of the gypsies then played their part in the development of La Heredia also, which began in the early 1980´s, and discovered many antique and original doors, iron works and hand painted ceramics throughout Andalucia. Paco Parlade, one of the Parlade brothers who was the architect behind La Heredia, often altered his designs to accommodate these authentic artefacts.

Today La Heredia can be described as the Positano of Southern Spain, with vertiginous houses tumbling down towards the coast in a cascade of bright Mediterranean colours. No less photo-worthy are its streets and plaza´s, flanked by wisteria-draped balconies and walk ways with grape vines suspended overhead. La Heredia was designed to make the most of the Andalucían climate that is mild and temperate all year round. Delightful Plazas, fountains, pools and gardens draw you outdoors, and the many terraces offer magnificent views of Gibraltar and Africa.

The colourful townhouses offer spectacular views across golf courses and mountains down to the Mediterranean, Gibraltar and the coastline of North Africa. The homes are also uniquely individual. From the antique wooden doors and hand-painted tiles to the sunny colour schemes in harmony with the surroundings - no two homes are alike! Yet each home offers the same feeling of style, spaciousness and luxury. The village is a gated community offering 24-hour security and boasts 2 communal swimming pools, one of which is heated in the winter months.
La Heredia also offers a local Bar, as well as a bakery and butchers.
